If you wish to move around the city, check details on Santiago’s public transportation systems (Transantiago (buses), Metro (subway) and taxis) here.
In general, public transportation systems (urban buses and subway or combination of both) costs less than 1US$ for a 120 minute ride. There are slightly reduced rates at non-peak hours of the day.

Other Useful Information about Santiago
Safety
- Although Santiago is a relatively safe city, certain precautions are advisable, especially in the downtown area. Do not wear costly jewellery, and keep an eye on your handbags, cell phones and cameras. Try not to walk in dark or deserted areas, and take only the cash you need with you when you go out.
- In Santiago earthquakes (tremors) are commonplace. If one happens during your visit, stay calm because the city is built with seismic protection and high safety standards.
- Chilean gastronomy is, generally speaking, quite mild and light, which makes it easily digestible; however, one should always be careful when sampling the delicious seafood recipes. We recommend you try these dishes only in established eateries.
- Tap water is drinkable, but as a precaution, it is recommended that you drink bottled water, especially in towns on the outskirts.
Currency
- All major credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Diners and American Express) and travellers' checks are widely accepted in Santiago. The situation is different in the more remote areas, where it is better to take cash, preferably local currency (Chilean peso), although the U.S. dollar and the euro (to a lesser extent) are excellent alternatives.
- For currency exchange, authorized Exchange Bureaus (“Casas de Cambio”) and banks should be preferred. It is not recommended to exchange currency with street vendors. As of April 2008, the exchange rate is 450 pesos to the dollar and 715 pesos to the euro.
- Banks are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exchange bureaus are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Department stores and malls open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. General business hours are from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. through 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m.
In case of Emergency
- In case of robbery or accident, report it to the closest "Carabineros" (uniformed police) station. You are also recommended to consult with your Embassy or Consulate for advice. See a list of Embassies and Consulates in Santiago here.
- The following emergency phone numbers may be useful:
131 (Ambulance),
132 (Fire brigade, “Bomberos”),
133 (Police, "Carabineros"),
103 (Directory service).
Other
-In Santiago restaurants, a 10% tip is customary. When paying taxis (cabs, black with a yellow top), pay the exact meter cost or round off the figure indicated by the meter (optional).
- Electric power in Chile is 220 V/ 50 Hz, while the video system is VHS / NTSC.
